Build Your Own Box lets you fill a 4, 8 or 12 cookie box with any combination you like. Repeats are allowed, so four of the same flavour is a perfectly valid answer if that is what someone wants.

If you are sending it to someone else
Range beats depth. A 12 with six or seven different flavours gives the person opening it something to choose from, and makes the box feel considered rather than bulk-bought. It also hedges against a preference you do not know about.
If you are keeping it
Do the opposite. Most people already know their flavour. Four Nutella in a 4-pack is not a waste of the builder — it is the builder doing exactly its job.
Mixing rich with plain
Double Chocolate and Nutella back to back is a lot of chocolate. Putting an Oatmeal Raisin or a Chocolate Chip Walnut between them gives the box somewhere to breathe. If you are building an 8 or a 12, a rough two-to-one split of rich to classic tends to hold up better than all-rich.
The larger the box, the better the value
A 4-pack works out at $6.00 a cookie, an 8-pack at $5.50, and a 12-pack at $5.33. Not a dramatic curve, but if you are deciding between an 8 and a 12 for a gift, the 12 is the one that looks generous when the lid comes off.
